Air Bags[1] and Restraints
Safety and security come first. Both the All New 2008 Jeep® Liberty Sport and Limited models feature standard advanced multistage driver and front-passenger air bags, supplemental side-curtain air bags with Occupant Classification System (OCS), and roll-sensing technology for additional side-impact protection. All five passengers have shoulder restraint seatbelts.
- During a front collision, the impact sensors initiate the front seat belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack from the seat belts, helping reduce the forward momentum of occupants' heads and torsos.
- Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats.
- BeltAlert periodically activates a chime and illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without the driver being properly belted.
- A two-stage digressive load-limiting retractor feature limits the maximum force on the belt webbing to help absorb the energy of the occupant's upper torso during an impact.
- Height-adjustable front seat belts allow the driver and front passenger to raise and lower the shoulder belt and encourages seat belt usage by offering a more comfortable fit.
- Interior Head-impact Protection: Interior pillars above the beltline and instrument panel including areas around windshield and rear window headers, roof and side-rail structures, and shoulder-belt turning loops were specifically designed to limit head-impact force.

Crumple Zones
Crumple zones are designed to compress during an accident to absorb energy from an impact, decreasing transfer of that energy to the occupants. Designing the body with advanced technologies allowed engineers to fine-tune much of the All New 2008 Jeep® Liberty's structural performance before a single prototype was built. The following features were specifically designed to provide occupant protection and vehicle safety in a collision:
- Full-length longitudinal rails made of high-strength alloy steel for energy absorption
- High-strength steel compression plate and side plate reinforcements added to the front rails to maintain passenger compartment integrity
- High-strength steel rail reinforcements help to increase energy absorption and to control crash deformation modes in the front rails
- Crush initiation features in the longitudinal rails help increase energy absorption
- The manual-adjust energy-absorbing steering column utilizes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy-absorption during a crash

Vehicle Structure
The All New 2008 Liberty's enhanced rear structure and mid-mounted fuel tank improves rear impact protection and fuel system integrity. The following vehicle structure features were specifically designed to provide occupant protection and vehicle safety in a collision:
- 70-percent of the underbody is high-strength steel
- 30-percent of the upper body is high-strength steel
- High-strength steel compression plate and side plate reinforcements added to the rear rails preserve integrity of the fuel tank and passenger compartment

Safety Cage
Side guard door beams in the All New 2008 Jeep® Liberty's front and rear doors provide added occupant protection during a side impact. The following safety cage features were specifically designed to provide occupant protection and vehicle safety in a collision:
- Reinforced longitudinal rails enhance the structural integrity of the passenger compartment
- Inner and outer rail reinforcements prevent intrusion
- Side reinforcement plates on the rear rails provide occupant compartment integrity in the event of rear impact events
- Knee bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove box door are designed to properly position the occupant, enabling the air bags to work effectively
